Jimmy Panetta, a U.S. Congressman representing California’s 19th district since 2017, has voiced strong opposition to recent legislative proposals through a series of tweets. Panetta, who succeeded Sam Farr and resides in Carmel Valley, has expressed concerns about the economic implications of these bills.
On May 16, 2025, Panetta criticized a bill that he claims undermines economic security and fiscal stability for the benefit of billionaires. He stated: “This bill fails working families, undermines our economic security, and explodes our fiscal foundation, all to pay for tax cuts for billionaires.”
Later that day, he reported on the failure of Speaker Johnson’s budget reconciliation bill in the House Budget Committee. He argued against it due to its potential impact on social benefits: “NEW: Speaker Johnson’s partisan budget reconciliation bill just failed to pass out of our House Budget Committee. I argued against this bill because it would cut benefits for working families like Medicaid and SNAP to pay for tax cuts for billionaires, and explode our national”
On May 17, 2025, Panetta shared an analysis indicating that Speaker Johnson’s tax bill disproportionately favors billionaires while reducing essential services like Medicaid and food assistance. He emphasized the need for policies supporting the middle class and vulnerable populations: “New analysis shows Speaker Johnson’s tax bill disproportionately benefits billionaires, all while cutting Medicaid & food assistance for those who need it most. We should be focusing on policies that lift up the middle class of this country and our most vulnerable.”
