Rep. Jimmy Panetta, a U.S. Congressman representing California’s 19th district since 2017, has voiced his concerns over the fiscal policies being pursued by the House Majority. In a series of tweets dated May 16, 2025, Panetta criticized a proposed tax plan and its implications for the national debt and social welfare programs.
In his first tweet, Panetta stated, “The House Majority continues to push a $3.8 trillion tax giveaway that will blow an even bigger hole in the national debt, while slashing Medicaid and food assistance for working families. Millions would lose health coverage just to fund more breaks for billionaires.”
Later that day, Panetta provided updates from the House Budget Committee markup session. He tweeted, “I’m in the House Budget Committee markup right now, where the Majority’s reconciliation bill is on full display. Let’s be clear about what it does https://t.co/EZ9XdIWEzH.”
In a subsequent tweet, he outlined specific impacts of the reconciliation bill: ” Adds nearly $7 trillion to the debt Slashes Medicaid/ACA, stripping coverage from over 10 million Americans Makes deep cuts to food assistance, hitting over 11 million Americans Hands $700 a day in tax breaks to billionaires, while the lowest-income working.”
Jimmy Panetta was born in Washington D.C., in 1969 and currently resides in Carmel Valley. He graduated from the University of California, Davis with a BA in 1991 and earned his JD from Santa Clara University in 1996.
