The Monterey County Sheriff’s Office announced on May 12 that a juvenile was arrested following an attempted robbery and subsequent foot pursuit in Carmel.

The incident highlights the role of community members and law enforcement agencies working together to respond quickly to criminal activity. The Sheriff’s Office emphasized the importance of witness cooperation while also cautioning against direct intervention by civilians.

According to the press release, deputies responded at approximately 10:30 a.m. on May 9 to a report of a robbery attempt in the 26300 block of Carmel Rancho Lane. Witnesses reported that a juvenile tried to steal personal items from a woman and was being chased by another individual. When deputies arrived, they located the suspect, who then led them on a foot chase through local businesses in the Carmel Rancho Shopping Center before initially evading arrest.

With assistance from witnesses, officers from the Carmel Police Department, and California State Parks Rangers, authorities found and detained the suspect near Carmel Middle School. The suspect was identified as a 15-year-old male juvenile. “While the Monterey County Sheriff’s Office appreciates the willingness of community members to assist during emergencies, we do not encourage the public to physically intervene or place themselves in potentially dangerous situations,” Sheriff Tina Nieto said. “For their own safety, we ask community members to instead focus on being good witnesses by promptly calling 911, providing accurate descriptions, and sharing information that can assist responding law enforcement personnel. In this case, it was those witness statements and calls to 911 that led to the successful and safe apprehension of our suspect.”

The victim had left before deputies arrived but contacted authorities later confirming she had been targeted for an attempted robbery. The juvenile was released into his father’s custody while charges for attempted robbery and resisting or delaying an officer were forwarded to prosecutors.

The Sheriff’s Office thanked all assisting agencies for their support during this investigation.
