On May 7, 2025, Panetta announced the release of Cliona Ward, a legal permanent resident of Santa Cruz County for 30 years, who had been detained and threatened with deportation. He stated, “I’m proud to share that Cliona Ward…will be released after being detained and threatened with deportation.” He emphasized his efforts from the “top down and bottom up,” pressing officials from various levels to secure her release.
In a subsequent tweet on the same day, Panetta expressed gratitude towards those who helped afford Cliona due process. He criticized current administration policies by stating, “This case is an example of the Administration’s overreaching deportation policies…” Panetta underscored the importance of due process in such cases.
