On April 2, 2025, Panetta tweeted about potential economic repercussions from a proposed import tariff. He stated that “A 20% tariff on most imports would be devastating for American workers, businesses, and families, leading to job losses, higher prices, and a potential recession.”
Later that day, Panetta highlighted a meeting with local partners from Monterey regarding regional defense installations. In his tweet, he mentioned the importance of these installations by saying “Great meeting with local partners from Monterey today to discuss our region’s critical defense installations and the vital role they play in supporting our national security and local economy. Together, we’ll continue advocating for the resources and support our community needs.”
In another post on the same date, Panetta criticized the current administration’s policies toward the agriculture sector. He tweeted, “Farmers across the country are feeling the sting of this Administration’s cuts and tariffs. From slashing funding for local food programs to sparking trade wars, this administration is hurting the agriculture industry. We are fighting to ensure that the federal government lives.”
