Rep. Jimmy Panetta, a U.S. Congressman representing California’s 19th district since 2017, addressed the ongoing government shutdown and related issues in a series of posts on October 2, 2025.
In his first message, Panetta assured constituents that his offices would remain operational during the shutdown. He stated, “Many Americans are wondering how they will be impacted during this shutdown. My offices remain open to serve constituents, and we have compiled a list of answers to frequently asked questions about what to expect during this period. Later that day, Panetta criticized Secretary Hegseth’s recent actions involving military leadership. He wrote, “Secretary Hegseth’s decision to summon hundreds of generals and flag officers from their missions at substantial financial cost to promote a regressive culture war is an unacceptable waste of time, money, and resources. I joined my colleagues, many of whom are fellow veterans, in https://t.co/HmQtktmsR9” (October 2, 2025).
Appearing on CNN the same evening, Panetta discussed the political impasse causing the shutdown. He said, “Was on CNN, talking about the need to end the shutdown. Unfortunately, Republicans, who are in charge of the House, Senate, and White House, refuse to negotiate with Democrats. Shutdowns have serious consequences, especially with the cuts being implemented by this Administration.” (October 2, 2025).
Panetta has represented California’s 19th District since succeeding Sam Farr in 2017 and resides in Carmel Valley. Born in Washington D.C., he holds degrees from UC Davis and Santa Clara University.
