Representative Jimmy Panetta, currently serving in the U.S. Congress for California’s 19th district since 2017, expressed his opposition to a reconciliation tax bill proposed by the majority party. Through a series of tweets, he highlighted his concerns regarding the bill’s implications on national debt and its impact on working families.
On May 14, 2025, Rep. Panetta criticized the reconciliation tax bill in a tweet: “In @WaysMeansCmte, I spoke out against the Majority’s reconciliation tax bill because it guts benefits for working families to give tax breaks to billionaires, while adding $5.3 trillion to our national debt.” He voiced his disapproval of what he perceives as preferential treatment towards billionaires at the expense of working families and an increase in national debt.
In a follow-up tweet on the same day, Panetta stated: “This isn’t fiscal responsibility. It’s fiscal recklessness.” He accused the majority party of “stealing from working families to pay for billionaires” and emphasized the need for meaningful fiscal reform rather than supporting this particular bill.
Further expressing his legislative efforts, Panetta tweeted about proposing an amendment during a committee markup session: “I offered the first amendment in the @WaysMeansCmte markup.” The amendment aimed to remove what he described as an “unprecedented $4 trillion debt limit increase” from the partisan tax bill.
Born in Washington D.C. in 1969 and now residing in Carmel Valley, Jimmy Panetta holds degrees from both UC Davis and Santa Clara University School of Law. His educational background includes a Bachelor of Arts earned in 1991 and a Juris Doctor degree acquired in 1996.
