U.S. Representative Jimmy Panetta, who has represented California’s 19th district in Congress since 2017, used his social media platform on November 2, 2025, to address the ongoing federal government shutdown and its effects on working families.
In a post published at midnight UTC, Panetta wrote: “Working families are having to make hard choices because of this federal government shutdown. I continue to push the Administration to use the congressionally authorized emergency contingency fund for SNAP in November, and call on Speaker Johnson to get back to negotiating a” (November 2, 2025).
Later that day at 18:11 UTC, he highlighted the role of local organizations during the shutdown: “Food banks like Second Harvest are filling the need that the federal government shutdown is creating. Congressional leadership must do their job, come back to the negotiating table, and reopen the government to make sure working families can put food on the table.”
By evening at 20:08 UTC, Panetta addressed healthcare costs amid the shutdown: “The explosion in healthcare costs across the country are forcing many people in CA-19 to have to choose between healthcare and making ends meet. That’s why Speaker Johnson and the Majority must bring us back to Washington to negotiate a bipartisan path to open up the government,”
Panetta’s statements reflect concerns about access to food assistance programs such as SNAP during periods when congressional negotiations stall. He also referenced community efforts by organizations like Second Harvest Food Bank stepping in as federal support lapses.
Jimmy Panetta succeeded Sam Farr as representative for California’s 19th district beginning in 2017. Born in Washington D.C. in 1969 and currently residing in Carmel Valley, Panetta holds degrees from UC Davis (BA) and Santa Clara University (JD).
