Representative Jimmy Panetta, who has served California’s 19th district in the U.S. Congress since 2017, recently addressed the impact of the ongoing federal government shutdown and commented on international developments involving Israel and Hamas in a series of posts on X.
On October 8, 2025, Panetta shared his concerns about the effects of the shutdown, particularly for federal employees in his district. He wrote, “This shutdown has real consequences for hard-working people. I heard from federal workers in CA-19 on the impacts of this shutdown on their livelihoods. We will continue our work to protect healthcare and the livelihoods of federal workers and working families.”
The following day, Panetta responded to news of an agreement between Israel and Hamas, stating, “Congratulatory but cautious on the announcement that Israel and Hamas have agreed to the first phase of the 20-point peace plan. Although I’ve long called for the release of all hostages and cessation of hostilities, it must happen immediately. As happy as we are for this” (October 9, 2025).
Later that same day, Panetta criticized the Administration’s approach to resolving the shutdown. He posted, “The Administration’s threats to fire federal workers to end this shutdown are retaliatory and put the livelihoods of thousands in CA-19 at risk. I am proud to stand with my colleagues and push for negotiations that protect hardworking families in CA-19 and across the country.” (October 9, 2025).
Panetta has represented California’s 19th district since replacing Sam Farr in 2017. He was born in Washington, D.C., in 1969 and currently resides in Carmel Valley. He holds a BA from the University of California, Davis, and a JD from Santa Clara University.
