About 30.5 percent of the 400 degrees and certificates handed out by the Middlebury Institute of International Studies at Monterey in 2017-18 were to students in social sciences programs, making them the most popular programs that year, according to the latest disclosure from the U.S. Department of Education.

The agency's National Center for Education Statistics shows the private not-for-profit institution in Monterey conferred 112 master's degrees and 6 bachelor's degrees in social sciences programs.

But the single most popular program was for a master's degree in language interpretation and translation. Data shows the school gave out 105 master's degrees in language interpretation and translation, followed by 59 master's degrees in "other" international relations and national security studies and 53 master's degrees in international relations and affairs.

The institute enrolled 670 students for 2017-18, including 5 in undergraduate programs and 665 in graduate programs.
