Cost of college went up for non-resident students at Monterey Peninsula College

In-state tuition and fees were unchanged for 2018-19 at Monterey Peninsula College, according to recent data from the U.S. Department of Education.

California residents paid $1,176 to attend the two-year public institution in both the 2017-18 and 2018-19 academic years.

Non-resident students would have paid 526.5 percent more than residents this year, or $7,368. Non-resident tuition and fees grew 8.5 percent from $6,792 in 2017-18.

About 92 percent of the school's undergraduate population are California residents. And about 2 percent are citizens of other countries.

Data shows 69 percent of full-time undergraduates who started school in 2015-16 received student financial aid in some form. In all, 357 students received grants or scholarships totaling $1.8 million and 15 students took out student loans totaling more than $83,535.

Including all undergraduates (8,017), 3,193 students used grants or scholarships totaling $11.1 million, and 138 students took out $807,143 in federal student loans.
