Cal State Monterey Bay Athletics issued the following announcement on Dec 8.

We continue to celebrate the top student-athletes for their efforts in the classroom with the 2020 CCAA Fall Championship Scholar Awards this week. Today, the conference is pleased to announce Cal State Monterey Bay runner Brooke Roy as this year’s Women’s Cross Country Championship Scholar.

Hailing from Camas, Wash., Roy keeps a 4.0 grade-point average in her studies in kinesiology to lead the pack for the top GPA of all qualified cross country runners in the CCAA.

“Brooke epitomizes what DII student-athletes are all about - academics, with athletics close behind,” said Cal State Monterey Bay head cross country coach Greg Rhines. “She has nailed down her studies while also being an uprising talent in both of her sports. Along with all this, Brooke manages to be a positive force for my programs, even at 7 a.m.! There are many words to describe Brooke, and one is definitely 'driven'.”

On the course in 2019, Roy led the Otters in six of the team’s seven outings, turning in three top-10 individual finishes. She raced to a collegiate best time of 21: 56.0 in the 6,000 meters at the Santa Clara Bronco Invitational on Oct. 19.

Roy was also honored as the 2020 Women’s Track and Field Championship Scholar announced in May.

“I'm so happy that Brooke is being honored for her dedication, hard work and disciplined approach to her academics and her sport,” noted Kirby Garry, director of athletics for the Otters. “She continues to carry the flag for our cross country program, achieving a high level of success in the classroom and in competition.”

The Championship Scholar Award is presented to the student-athlete with the highest cumulative grade-point average participating at the final CCAA championship site in each conference-sponsored sport. For the 2020-21 academic year, all participating student-athletes in each sport will receive consideration for the award.

This year’s slate of women nominated for this prestigious academic distinction in the sport of women’s cross country included Katya Candray (San Francisco State), Emily Delgado (Stanislaus State), Gracie Dupuis (Chico State), Jodi Go (Cal State East Bay), Makayla Jones (Cal State San Marcos), Zarah Kayhan (Humboldt State), Gina Rowley (Sonoma State), Rebecca Ruiz (Cal State LA), Araseli Servin (Cal Poly Pomona), and Abigail Toarmina (Cal State San Bernardino).
