Early Goal Doesn’t Hold Up As Otters Fall To Gators

5

California State University, Monterey Bay issued the following announcement on Oct. 14.

Sierra Levy scores in the seventh minute but SFSU rallies for 2–1 win

Sierra Levy (Tulare Western HS) scored in the seventh minute, but the Cal State Monterey Bay women's soccer team couldn't make it stand up as host San Francisco State rallied for a 2–1 win Thursday afternoon in Cox Stadium.

Levy pounced on a loose ball that escaped the grasp of Gator goalkeeper Marcella Salyer to punch home her third of the season from the doorstep. The Gators responded six minutes later with an AJ Tanner goal then took the lead three minutes into the second half when Carissa Capinin scored an unassisted goal that proved to be the match-winner.

CSUMB out-shot SFSU 7–6 for the match, though Friday's effort marked the third consecutive outing in which neither the Otters nor their opponents reached double figures.

Brenda Uribe (East Palo Alto/Woodside Priory) and Mitsy Ramirez (Richmond/Making Waves Academy) led the offense with two shots each. Aubrey McKessy (Canyon Country/Canyon HS) made a pair of saves between the pipes.

THE MATCH WAS OVER WHEN… Marcella Salyer denied Mitsy Ramirez in the 88th minute in what was the final attempt at goal by either team.

IT IS UNUSUAL… Getting one goal by the Otter defense has become an unusual occurrence. Getting two over the line is downright strange. CSUMB allowed multiple goals in a match for just the third time this season Thursday at San Francisco State. The Otters have pitched seven shutouts in their first 11 games of 2021.

TAKING THEIR SHOTS… The Otters matched their season low with seven shots attempted Thursday at San Francisco State.. It marked the third consecutive match in which CSUMB had seven attempts. It's worth noting, however, the CSUMB has out–shot its opposition in all 11 matches this season and holds a 159–63 advantage through 11 games.

LEADERS OF THE RAFT… GOALS: Sierra Levy 1; ASSISTS: None; POINTS: Sierra Levy 2; SHOTS: Mitsy Ramirez/Brenda Uribe 2; SAVES: Aubrey McKessy 2.

THEY'VE GOT NEXT… CSUMB returns to the friendly confines of the Otter Sports Complex to begin their final homestand of 2021 when the face No. 13 Sonoma State. The women will kickoff at 11:30 a.m. as the opener of men's/women's doubleheader action.
