Lions Finish Sixth in Hawaii

2

Vanguard University Athletics issued the following announcement on Oct. 27.

While it might have been a trip to paradise for Vanguard women's golf, they also had some work to do out in the Pacific.  The Lions competed at the Dennis Rose Invitational hosted by the University of Hawaii - Hilo, competing against 12 other teams.  Vanguard ended every day in sixth place, finishing the event with a score of 937.  Grand Valley State won the team prize with a score of 889, while Biola's Brady Turnquist won the individual trophy with a final score of 214, (-2).

Set perfectly along the Kohala Coast, the course follows the cliffs that showcase the ocean, giving the players a challenge as they have to navigate not only the hazards but the terrain change, as the course has 700 feet of elevation change.  Designed by Arnold Palmer and Ed Seay, the course checks in just a little below 6,900 yards and is a par 72.

What Happened? The first day saw the Lions finish smack dab in the middle of a tight field.  The team shot a 310 on the day, not too far off Biola, who led the field with a 293.  Zoee Lynch (SO/Carlsbad, CA) led the way for VU, as she posted a 75 over the first 18 holes to finish tied for 10th. Annabell Le (FR/Aliso Viejo, CA) was one shot behind her in a large tie for 13th, having shot a 76 on the day. Kamryn Keller (JR/Yorba Linda, CA) was one shot beyond Le, as she shot a 77 to come home tied for 22nd after day one.  Brooklyn Motske (SO/Fountain Valley, CA) had an 82 on day one to finish tied for 47th, and Makayla Christiansen (SO/Oakdale, CA) shot an 87 to end the day in 64th.  Shyla Tigilau (FR/Mililani, HI) and Anslea Dean (SO/Parker, CO) played for VU as well, with Tigilau putting up a 90 and Dean a 99 to round out the scores for VU on day one.

VU set out on day two and ended the round with a 311.  Lee equaled her score (76) to end the second day tied for 16th.  Lynch lost two strokes to finish with a 77, moving her into a tie with Le.  Keller also went two worse for a 79, moving her into a tie for 24th.  Motske went the other way on the day, dropping two shots from her score to give her an 80 for round two, getting her into a tie for 46th.  Christiansen was the biggest mover on the day for the Lions, as she dropped her score to a 79 to move into a tie for 54th.  Tigilau also improved to an 88 for her second-round score, while Dean carded a 93, lowering her score by six.

Even though the final round saw the Lions post a 316, they did enough to remain in sixth, edging out Cal-State Monterey Bay by four strokes.  Lynch returned to her day one score of 75 to end the event tied for 13th, with a three-day total of 227.  Lynch was also plus seven on par-four holes, a top-half mark, and only plus one on par fives for the event.  She also racked up five birdies and 33 pars, topping the birdie list and coming in second on the team in pars.  Le carded a 79 for the final round to end tied for 18th with a 213.  Le also ended the event five over on par-four holes, the fifth-best mark in the field, and had 35 pars, the most on the team and five off the top mark of 40.

Keller was five shots back of Le, as Kamryn shot an 80 on the final day to finish with a grand total of 236.  Keller was consistent on par threes for the event, as she was even at the end of the tournament on the shorter holes.  Motske completed the third day with an 82 to finish tied for 46th with a 244.  Christiansen shot an 86 to finish in 58th with a 252.

Dean had her lowest score of the event on the final round with a 91 to finish with a 283, while Tigilau had a 93 to finish with a 271

Why is it important? The women conclude their fall season, having battled against quality programs from the NCAA DII world.  The Lions will now have to practice on their own during the winter off-season before they hit the links once more in the spring to compete for some GSAC glory.

What was said?  "I'm proud of the girls' effort against some tough competition," said Head Coach Jeff Anderson.  "It's a great way to end our fall season."
