Otters Can’t Sustain Hot Start, Fall To Saint Martin’s

3

California State University, Monterey Bay recently issued the following announcement.

CSUMB opens with 13–2 run but Saints Rally to win 73–66

Cal State Monterey Bay couldn't sustain a blazing hot start, allowing visiting Saint Martin's University to rally back for a 73–66 victory Saturday night in The Kelp Bed.

CSUMB (1–2 overall) began the game 5–for–5 from the field to open a 13–2 lead before the contest was three minutes old. But SMU (4–2) battled back to catch the Otters at 20 before eventually forging a 33–28 lead at the break.

The teams traded the lead several times in the second half, with the last change going in favor of the Saints at 58–55 with just over seven minutes to play. SMU was never able to run away, but the Otters never held the ball with a chance to retake the lead again.

Senior guard Jordan May (Troutdale, Ore./Point Loma Nazarene) led three Otters in double figures with a season–high 20 points. Junior forward Andrew Ferguson (Perth, Western Australia) added his first double–double of the season with 12 points and a game–high 12 rebounds.

THE GAME WAS STATISTICALLY OVER WHEN… SMU's Christian Haffner made a pair of free throws to account for the game's final points with 11 seconds remaining.

KRAMER LENDS A HAND (9 OF THEM)… Junior guard Tommy Kramer passed a career–high nine assists Saturday night versus Saint Martin's. That mark is tied for No. 10 in the Otter record book. The last Otter to pass more than nine assists in a game was Steve Monreal, who dished 10 against Concordia–Irvine on Dec. 13, 2008.

FIRST DOUBLE–DOUBLE IN THE BOOKS… Andrew Ferguson posted CSUMB's first double–double of the season with 12 points and 12 rebounds Saturday versus Saint Martin's. It was the first double–double by an Otter since Ferguson went for 16 and 10 at Stanislaus State on Jan. 23, 2020.

BOMBS AWAY… The Otters went 10–for–24 (.417) from beyond the arc Saturday night, their best long–range shooting through three games this season. The prolific shooting comes as little surprise in the Isaac Williams era of Otter basketball. It marked the 37th time in 82 games under Williams that the Otters have made 10 or more 3–pointers in a game.

LEADERS OF THE RAFT… POINTS: Jordan May 20; REBOUNDS: Andrew Ferguson 12; ASSISTS: Tommy Kramer 9; BLOCKS: None; STEALS: Three Otters 1.

THEY'VE GOT NEXT… The Otters open CCAA play with a trip up U.S. 101 for a pair of games next week. The journey begins Thursday (Dec. 2) with a visit to Sonoma State. Tip-off will be at 7:30 p.m. as the nightcap of men's/women's doubleheader action.
