Otters Go Where Eagles Dare To Lead At Pioneer Shootout

California State University, Monterey Bay recently issued the following announcement.

Otter golfers card five eagles through 36 holes

Cal State Monterey Bay golfers carded an impressive five eagles over the first two rounds to earn a 7–stroke lead at the Tim Tierney Pioneer Shootout Monday on the Corica Park South course.

CSUMB went 276 (–12) in the morning round — its lowest team round since shooting 274 at the Otter Invitational in October of 2017 — to claim an early lead. The Otters then closed on fire, playing their final four holes of the day a combined 4–under to finish at 14–under 562 through 36 holes.

Host Cal State East Bay is seven strokes back at 569.

Liam Allder (Sundsvall, Sweden) and Simon Björken (Hudiksval, Sweden) led the way for CSUMB. The freshman duo both finished at 5–under to earn a share of third place after two rounds. Björken went 70–69 for his 139, while Allder shot rounds of 67 and 72 for his.

Fellow freshman Jack Deaner (Carmichael/Jesuit HS) also claimed a spot in the Top 10, sharing eighth place at 1–under 141. Freshmen Tommy Kimberling (Rancho Cucamonga/Los Osos HS) and Ryan Parry (Sacramento/Jesuit HS) are tied for 34th place in the 95–player field at 1–over. Parry's day included a 69 in the morning round while Kimberling carded rounds of 71 and 74.

Cal State East Bay's Ananjan Kaushik owns the 36 hole lead at 8–under 136. Edvin Backstrom of Holy Names University is in second place at 6–under.

The Tim Tierney Pioneer Shootut concludes with 18 holes Tuesday at the Corica Park Golf Complex.
