54

Marina High School graduate Karla Herrera has chosen Our Lady of the Lake University in San Antonio, Texas to continue her cross country/track & field career. Despite being unable to compete in a Hartnell College uniform as a freshman due to the pandemic, Herrera made the most of her one season this spring to catch the attention of the NAIA program. Herrera will join a cross country/track & field program that was the 2021 Red River Conference Champions in cross country and sent two women to the NAIA Cross Country National Championship in Vancouver, WA. The Saints finished fourth at the Red River Outdoor Track & Field Championship but were represented in Gulf Shores, AL at the NAIA Outdoor Track & Field Championship.

Karla enjoyed a solid cross country season for the Panthers starting off her season with a second place overall finish at the Tour de Cuesta. She placed seventh overall at the Norcal Preview held at Sierra College before surprising herself with a lifetime best 10:53 3000m time at the Chabot Twilight. She helped the team to  second place finish at the Mt. SAC Invitational in her first ever run over the famed course. She saved her best race of the season for her final run over the familiar hills at Toro Park. In the Coast Conference Championship she placed sixth overall in 19:35 earning All-Conference honors and running her first sub 20:00 3 mile ever. Herrera capped her season by helping the Panthers to their third consecutive Norcal Championship.

This spring, Herrera shined on the track posting new personal bests from 200m through the 1500m. She qualified provisionally to the Norcal Championship in the 400m when she ran 62.99 at the Hartnell Last Chance Meet. Her 2:21.19 clocking in the 800 meters in the Norcal Championship Trials and Finals met the State "B" mark and placed her fifth overall helping the women's team to their third consecutive track & field title. She also lead off on the Norcal runner-up 4x400 team that clocked 4:04 to move to eleventh best all-time. She completed her Hartnell career competing at the CCCAA State Championship in both the 800m and 4x400 relay where she picked up an eighth place medal in the two lap event.

Karla will continue her degre in Kinesiology at Our Lady of the Lake.
