Otter sophomore two strokes back at Shark Shootout
Fresh from his victory at last week's Otter Invitational, Cal State Monterey Bay sophomore Simon Björken (Hudiksval, Sweden) finds himself in the hunt once again at the midway point of the Southwest Airlines/HPU Shark Shootout Tuesday at Leilehua Golf Course.
Björken, who vaulted all the way up to No. 1 amongst NCAA Division II players in this week's GolfStat national rankings, carded a 3–under 69 Tuesday for a share of third place. It marked the sophomore's fifth consecutive round in the 60s dating back to the final round of the Chico State Wildcat Invitational on Oct. 11.
Björken will enter Wednesday's final round trailing Chico State's Tyler Ashman, who shot 67 Tuesday, and Matthew Pennington of Cal State San Marcos (68).
As a team, CSUMB is tied for fourth at 1–over 289. Chico State leads the field at 9–under 279. Stanislaus State (284) and Cal State San Marcos (287) are the other teams the Otters will try to catch in Wednesday's final round.
In addition to Björken, Jack Deaner (Carmichael/Jesuit HS) carded an even par 72 Tuesday. Tommy Kimberling (Rancho Cucamonga/Los Osos HS) and Liam Allder (Sundsvall, Sweden) each shot 74 to close the CSUMB scoreline.
