CAL STATE MONTEREY BAY ATHLETICS: CCAA Releases PSA with a Focus on Community Engagement

Sports2

Cal State Monterey Bay Athletics issued the following announcement on Dec 14.

The CCAA shines a light on the value statement of community as we continue with the third installment in a series of public service announcements produced by Bay Area Online Sports Network (BASON) and  highlighting the five CCAA value statements.

The 12 member-institutions of the conference value activism, social engagement and service to the community. In the CCAA, we take pride in how we engage and collaborate with our campus, local, regional and state-wide communities.

At each institution, CCAA student-athletes participate in annual food drives, philanthropic and awareness events, and are part of the Division 2 commitment to the Make-A-Wish Foundation. As a conference, we foster participation in annual events through the CCAA Student-Athlete Advisory Committee and encourage each campus SAAC to find ways to offer the most impact and benefit to their local community.

In Division II, community engagement is a hallmark that is so important that the division established an annual Award of Excellence given to the Division II program that best exhibits the community engagement philosophy. This week, we will also take time to honor the CCAA’s four nominees for the 2021 award which will be voted on by national SAAC and presented in January as part of the NCAA Convention programming.

Some recent community service facts and figures across the country and conference include:

  • 179,524 Division II service hours logged through Helper Helper with 4,535 engagement opportunities revolving around civic and community engagement, children and youth, education, health and many other categories
  • In the CCAA, Stanislaus State (20th), Humboldt State (21st), Cal State Monterey Bay (47th), Sonoma State (53rd) and Cal State East Bay (55th) all landed in the top 60 in the national Helper Helper rankings
  • Humboldt State women’s soccer was ranked the highest performing women’s team in the country. Other top-10 teams in their sport include Humboldt State men’s soccer (2nd), volleyball (3rd) and softball (5th); Cal State San Bernardino baseball (8th); and Cal State Monterey Bay softball (8th).
  • In 2019-20, Division II collected $205,000 for Make-a-Wish, and since 2003 the division has contributed $6.2 million toward granting the wishes of children with life-threatening medical conditions.
  • On the conference level, the annual February Food Drive was yet again a success, where CCAA member-institutions collected 15,571 items for campus and regional food banks and pantries. Chico State was the biggest collector with 5,393 items, an increase of 132 percent over 2019. Cal State Dominguez Hills, Cal State East Bay and Humboldt State also saw increases over the previous year’s donations.
Being a student-athlete in the CCAA is more than just about participating in your sport. It’s about participating in your community.

The spot is narrated by Bay Area native Amy Touli, who played youth softball and soccer before switching sports to focus on basketball. After her high school playing days at Monta Vista, Touli enjoyed a successful career on the court at the University of San Francisco that ended with all-conference accolades. She now works as the women’s basketball analyst for Dons games.

With the tagline “Game On - Live and Later,” BAOSN delivers cost-effective, high definition, quality broadcasts of Bay Area high school and college sporting events over the web. The CCAA and BAOSN previously teamed up together in 2018 and 2019 to produce and broadcast multiple CCAA Championship events on the fields, diamonds and courts around the conference.
