In order to strengthen the integrity of the levee on the Monterey County side of the Pajaro River, the Monterey County Water Resources Agency will be conducting minor necessary repairs on portions of the river’s levees in anticipation of the incoming storms.

Prior to the recent atmospheric river which began on December 26, 2022, the Monterey County Water Resources Agency made numerous preparations, including installing a floodwall at the low points on the earthen levee.

The Pajaro River basin has experienced significant rainfall and high flow events in recent days. The Evacuation Order for the Pajaro community, which was issued Monday, January 9 at approximately 9:00 am will remain in place until further notice.

The repairs are intended to strengthen the integrity of the levee. County officials which include the Sheriff’s Office, County and State Fire Agencies, and the County of Monterey’s Department of Emergency Management are all in agreement with this decision. “We understand people are eager to get home but appreciate your patience while we keep these areas free for contractors to move about and keep residents out of harm’s way,” said Monterey County Sheriff, Tina Nieto.

The Water Resources Agency will continue to provide updates as progress is made.
